Five Dives. Five Different Learning Experiences.
The SDI Advanced Adventure Diver course introduces you to five different diving specialties. Deep and navigation are the two core dives; three additional eligible specialties are selected around your interests, experience, local conditions and the training that will benefit you most.
This is a guided exploration course, not five complete specialty certifications. Each dive includes focused preparation, skill development and reflection so you leave with clearer direction—not simply a collection of experiences.

Prerequisites and Readiness
- SDI Open Water Scuba Diver, SDI Junior Open Water Scuba Diver, or an equivalent recognised certification.
- Minimum age 18, or age 10 with written parental consent.
- Junior divers may participate only in specialties approved for their age and must train and dive under the required direct supervision.
- Complete the required SDI administrative and medical documentation before in-water training.
- Recent diving experience, comfort in the planned conditions and reliable foundational skills; a refresher or buoyancy coaching may be recommended after review.
How the Five Dives Work
Deep Adventure
Plan and conduct a supervised dive deeper than 18 metres / 60 feet, within the course depth limit, while managing gas, time, buoyancy and the physiological considerations of deeper diving.
Navigation Adventure
Use natural features and a compass to plan routes, estimate distance and complete practical underwater navigation patterns.
Your Selected Adventures
Choose three eligible specialty introductions with your instructor. Options may include advanced buoyancy, dry suit, night/limited visibility, drift, boat or other suitable SDI specialties.
The selected dives depend on age, conditions, equipment, diver readiness and the instructor ratings required by SDI. Overhead-environment and non-diving specialties cannot count towards this certification.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many dives are included?
The SDI standard requires five open-water dives, each with a complete instructor briefing and debriefing.
Which dives are compulsory?
A deep dive and a navigation dive are the two core dives. Three further eligible SDI specialty dives are selected to suit the diver, conditions and instructor qualifications.
Does this course certify me in five specialties?
No. It provides an overview and introductory dive from each selected specialty. One qualifying dive may later be credited towards the corresponding full specialty certification.
How deep is the deep adventure dive?
The required deep dive is deeper than 18 metres / 60 feet and no deeper than 30 metres / 100 feet. Divers aged 10 through 14 may not exceed 21 metres / 70 feet, and all dives remain within applicable certification and conditions.
Can this course lead to Rescue Diver?
Yes. SDI Advanced Adventure Diver is one pathway into Rescue Diver. SDI also accepts at least 15 logged open-water dives, together with the applicable CPR and first-aid prerequisites.
Is certification guaranteed after completing five dives?
No. Certification is earned by completing the required academics and consistently demonstrating the required dive skills, planning and sound judgement.
