SDI Divemaster
The Divemaster program develops the ability to supervise and conduct dives for certified divers within the graduate’s prior training and to assist an active SDI Instructor during approved courses.
Before You Begin
- SDI Advanced Adventure Diver or equivalent, with verifiable deep, navigation, night and limited-visibility experience.
- SDI Rescue Diver or equivalent.
- Current adult and child emergency-care and oxygen-administration certification, or accepted equivalent.
- A physician-signed medical and the required leadership documentation.
What You Must Demonstrate
- At least five briefings and debriefings, and guidance of at least four dives across varied sites and conditions.
- Planning, group control, problem recognition, navigation and emergency management.
- Watermanship, a complete rescue scenario and Open Water skills at Divemaster quality while neutrally buoyant.
- Use of a surface marker buoy, an emergency action plan and a practical dive-site map.
Graduation experience: at least 60 logged dives, or 50 logged dives with 25 accumulated underwater hours. At least 30 dives must represent as broad a range of environmental factors as possible.
Stage 02 · Teaching apprenticeship
SDI Assistant Instructor
This is a substantial teaching-development program—not merely a short bridge. Candidates work with an active instructor across classroom, confined-water and open-water training while learning to plan, present, supervise and solve problems.
Supervised Course Experience
- Assist with one complete SDI Open Water Scuba Diver course, attending its classroom, confined-water and open-water sessions.
- Assist with four different SDI specialty courses or equivalents.
- Assist with one SDI Rescue course or equivalent.
- Complete the required academic, confined-water and open-water presentations.
Graduate Scope
- Teach and certify SDI Snorkeling and conduct the SDI Inactive Diver/Refresher program.
- Conduct the Open Water knowledge review under indirect supervision of an active SDI Instructor.
- Assist in approved courses and lead certified divers within prior training.
- Teach approved specialties only after receiving the required specialty-instructor training.
The SDI Assistant Instructor course must be taught by an active SDI Course Director. Assisted-course records and all required certification documents must be submitted for approval.
Stage 03 · Instructor qualification
SDI Open Water Scuba Instructor
The Instructor program combines development with independent evaluation. Candidates learn to design and deliver lessons, manage students and assistants, demonstrate skills neutrally buoyant and apply SDI standards, ethics and risk-management requirements.
IDC · Development
- Minimum 40 hours under direct supervision.
- Four classroom presentations, including physics and physiology topics.
- Four confined-water and four open-water teaching lessons.
- Demonstration-quality Open Water skills, rescue, watermanship and problem-solving.
IEC · Independent Evaluation
- Minimum 10 hours under direct supervision of the evaluating Instructor Trainer.
- At least one 15-minute classroom presentation, one full confined-water lesson and one full open-water lesson.
- Assessment of teaching, standards knowledge, judgement, risk management and professional conduct.
- The IEC must be completed within six months of finishing the IDC.
Total program requirement: at least 100 hours. Up to 40 hours from Divemaster or Assistant Instructor training may be credited at the trainer’s discretion, with at least 50 hours directly supervised by a current SDI Course Director or Instructor Trainer.
Standards, Assessment and Professional Readiness
Medical and Administration
A physician-signed medical is required before training and must be current when certification paperwork is submitted. Leadership credentials are not active until SDI has processed and verified them.
Knowledge and Remediation
Leadership final examinations require at least 80 percent, followed by complete remediation of missed material. Standards knowledge must be applied in planning and teaching—not simply recalled.
Performance over Attendance
Minimum hours and dives do not guarantee certification. Candidates must demonstrate watermanship, rescue ability, demonstration-quality skills, judgement, communication and professional conduct.

Frequently Asked Questions
Where does the SDI professional pathway begin?
For most candidates, the first professional leadership level is SDI Divemaster. Entry requires the specified advanced, rescue, emergency-care and diving-experience prerequisites. We review your records and recent experience before confirming a training plan.
Can I complete Divemaster, Assistant Instructor and Instructor consecutively?
They may be planned as a pathway, but each leadership certification must be registered and approved by SDI before the next phase begins. Readiness is assessed at every level rather than assumed from completing the previous course.
Does Assistant Instructor qualify me to teach the Open Water course independently?
No. Assistant Instructors have a defined scope that includes assisting active instructors and conducting certain approved programs. Independent Open Water Scuba Diver instruction requires the SDI Open Water Scuba Diver Instructor rating.
How is the SDI Instructor program assessed?
The Instructor program has two parts: an Instructor Development Course and an Instructor Evaluation Course. The evaluation must be conducted by an appropriately rated, separate active SDI Instructor Trainer in accordance with current standards.
Are the published minimum dives and hours enough to guarantee acceptance or certification?
No. They are minimum eligibility and course requirements. Professional readiness also depends on recent experience, watermanship, rescue ability, demonstration-quality skills, judgement, communication and consistent professional conduct.
Is a medical examination required?
Yes. SDI leadership candidates require a medical form signed by a licensed physician before starting training. It must remain current when the leadership certification paperwork is submitted.
Can prior experience reduce the course duration?
Only where the current SDI standards specifically allow credit. Any credit is applied at the discretion of the appropriately rated trainer and does not remove required performance, evaluation or certification steps.
