Who This Course Is For

  • Certified divers considering a technical-diving pathway.
  • Divers who want stronger buoyancy, trim and propulsion before progressing.
  • Technical divers returning after a break who would benefit from a fundamentals review.

Prerequisites and Readiness

  • Minimum age 18, or 15 with parental consent.
  • SDI Open Water Scuba Diver or equivalent.
  • Proof of at least 25 logged open-water dives.
  • Comfort with basic mask, regulator and gas-sharing skills.
  • A configuration appropriate to the training objectives, agreed with the instructor.

How Training Works

The course combines detailed planning and equipment sessions with at least three dives conducted no deeper than 23 metres. Skills are developed in neutral buoyancy and appropriate trim. This is not a staged-decompression course and no training dive exceeds the diver’s existing certification limits.

Course duration is performance-based. Meeting minimum attendance or dive numbers does not guarantee certification; all required knowledge and skills must be demonstrated consistently.

Skills and Knowledge

Equipment selection, configuration and pre-dive checks.
Buoyancy, horizontal trim and multiple propulsion techniques.
Gas planning, gas matching and team communication.
Regulator response, gas donation and valve-management drills appropriate to configuration.
DSMB deployment and controlled ascent procedures.
Situational awareness, positioning and disciplined dive execution.

Continue Your Development

Technical capability is developed through deliberate practice and experience between formal courses. Your next step should reflect your recent diving, equipment configuration and objectives.

The Blue Water Ascent approach

Competence Before Certification

We coach understanding, judgement and repeatable performance—not minimum-standard completion. Training is adapted to the diver while every certification requirement and course limit is preserved.
